June 9: Basic Upright Style Using a Suiban Container and a Kenzan:
The Basic Upright Style is the very basis of Sogetsu Ikebana. Using a low, shallow container (called Suiban) and a Kenzan (needle holder or “pin frog”), students will learn the three dimensional measurement and placement of flowers and branches to create this iconic style of Japanese flower arrangement. The balance between all elements in the design offers fresh perspective on each element, and the process of creation becomes its own form of meditation. Fresh Summer flowers and branches will be provided for each student. Students should bring their own Suiban containers and a Kenzan, which can be purchased at “Michaels”. Some containers and Kenzans will be available for purchase for a nominal price at the class.
